Sometimes it can be a bit daunting shopping for a winter horse rug. How much fill? How tough does it need to be? Does my horse need an under rug? At Hewitt & Whitty Saddlery we want to help you find the perfect winter rug for your horse and make the process as easy as possible. Here are our top 5 picks this winter.
1 Horseware Amigo Super Bravo
The Amigo Super Bravo is a must have for those wanting a Horseware Rug. This rug is made from a super tough 2520 denier polyester (keep in mind a 1200 denier polyester is usually thought of as a tough rug. This one is twice that!) So super tough and super waterproof.
It comes with all the familiar Horseware features, the v front closure, three surcingles and a superior fit (Horseware rugs just fit, they don’t move side to side!)
The Super Bravo has 250g of polyfill ( now Horseware think of this as a medium weight, but for us Aussies, in most places this is enough and we think of it more as a heavy) This is warm enough for my Thoroughbred ( who is unclipped). You can use Horseware liners under this to custom the warmth to your particular horse (if it’s clipped, thin coated or you live in a much colder place)
From experience, I would be comfortable saying you will get more than a single season out of this rug! Think Rambo quality for an Amigo price.
2. Horseware Rhino Plus Reflectech
If you have a horse who is tough on their rugs (and we have all had one of them) then the Rhino is for you!
The Rhino is made from 1000 denier polypropylene so it’s super super tough (stronger alternative to the widely used polyester denier) and super super waterproof.
The rhino uses Barrier Technology, which means in the unlikely event that you rugs rips there is a second waterproof layer under neither! This model has reflective yarn incorporated into it so makes finding your horse and feeding up in the dark much easier.
The Rhino has a 250g varilayer. This means across the back there is 250g fill and as the fill moves down the sides it reduces to 100g. This keeps the weight of the rug down while keeping the important parts warm. From experience some horses may need a liner under to keep just that little bit extra warm in the deep of winter.
This rhino is a winter investment that you will pull out winter after winter!!
3. Horseware Amigo Stable Plus
This is our top pick for a quality stable rug! This is the first dual purpose rug that can be used as a liner or can have liners attached under it- really allowing you to customize the warmth for you horse.
Just attach a 0g outer layer ( Rhino Lite anyone) to the top for day turnout!
The disc front also allows for a buckle free closure and allows other rugs to lay flat over the top. The beautiful diamond quilting is soft and elegant enough to be used as a travel or stable rug. This one is a must have for those who horses are more often stabled during the colder weather.
4. Horze Nevada
The Nevada range of rugs from Horze is budget friendly, but still a great quality option.
I have used these rugs on a few older horses and they fit great and my horses were warm and dry. And I got a few seasons out of them!!
The Nevada range boost a 1200 denier polyester outer( this will stand up to most of anything that is thrown at it) and comes in 200g or 300g weight.
Great winter rugs that wont break the bank!
5. Horseware Rambo Deluxe Fleece
This one is on the list because its so simple!
Made from bonded anti pilling fleece it boosts a classic front closure and double cross over surcingles. The iconic design makes you think Horseware. This rug has stood the test of time and can be used in a multitude of ways. Can be used as under rug for additional warmth, travel or stable rug or even as a cooling rug!
It can even be used to wrapped yourself in when hanging around the stables! Trust us when we say you will reach for this one time and time again.
